WEB SYSTEMS AND APPLICATIONS

What is a web application?

A web application is a website that lets people do something, such as book, register or manage information, rather than only read pages.

Short answer

A normal website mostly shows the same content to everyone. A web application changes what it shows depending on who is using it and what they do, which MDN describes as dynamic (external site, opens in a new tab) behaviour, with code running in the browser and on a server. Booking systems, member portals and dashboards are web applications. They cost more and need more care than a brochure site.

  1. Visitor

Logs in or fills a form.

  2. Application

Runs the rules on a server.

  3. Database

    Stores the information.

  4. Staff view

    Sees and manages it.

Website or web application?

  • Website: pages that inform, such as services, about and contact.
  • Web application: logins, forms that save data, bookings, dashboards and reports.

A practical example

A training centre takes course applications by WhatsApp and a spreadsheet. A web application can collect applications through a form, store them safely and let staff see who has applied. The problem is the process, not the website.

What it needs

Code that runs on a server, a database to keep information, and security care because people's information is stored. That is why a web application should start with a written scope.

Benefits and limits

  • Saves staff time on repeated manual work.
  • Gives customers a way to act at any hour.
  • Costs more than an information website.
  • Needs ongoing updates, backups and security checks.
  • Handles personal information, so privacy must be planned.

Common questions

Do I need a web application?

If staff spend hours on bookings, forms or spreadsheets, it may help. If you only need to inform customers, a normal website is enough.

Is it safe to store customer information?

It can be, when designed with security in mind and kept updated. See the protection guide.

How much does it cost?

It depends on scope, so ADA quotes web systems in writing after understanding the process.

Can it grow later?

Often yes, if it is planned in stages. Start with the one process that causes the most work.

Need help with this?

Optional. You do not need any ADA service to use what you have just read.
