SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION

What is AI search optimisation?

AI search optimisation is the effort to make your website easy for AI-powered search features to understand and use, and the sound version of it is mostly good SEO.

Short answer

Search engines now show AI-generated answers that link to websites. Google's guidance says there are no extra requirements to appear in these features beyond normal SEO (AI features and your website (external site, opens in a new tab)). So the advice is to publish clear, helpful, accurate pages and keep the technical basics right. Be wary of anyone who promises to place you in AI answers.

  1. Clear pages

    One topic, plain answers.

  2. Structured data

    Matches what is visible.

  3. Search and AI features

    Choose sources they trust.

  4. Customer

    Clicks through and contacts you.

What changed

Some searches now start with a written summary produced by AI, with links to the sources. People may click less in some cases, so being a clear, trusted source matters.

What sound AI-ready practice looks like

  • Clear pages. One topic per page, with plain headings and direct answers.
  • Accurate business details in the same words everywhere, including Google Business Profile.
  • Helpful content written for people. See people-first content (external site, opens in a new tab).
  • Technical basics. Pages that can be crawled, indexed and load on a phone.
  • Structured data where it matches the page. See what is schema markup.

What to be careful about

  • Guarantees of AI visibility. No one controls these systems.
  • Special files or tricks sold as required. Google says nothing extra is needed beyond its normal guidance for its AI features.
  • Machine-written filler. Pages with no real value do not help people or search.
  • Invented facts. Keep claims accurate and sourced.

Benefits and limits

  • The work also helps ordinary search and visitors.
  • Results change as AI features change.
  • You cannot control what an AI summary says.
  • It will not replace a clear website and good service.

What is AI search readiness?

Google's AI features in Search use the same foundations as ordinary search. There are no extra requirements: pages that can be crawled, indexed and are genuinely helpful are the ones eligible to appear.

Common questions

Is AI search optimisation different from SEO?

Mostly no. Google's guidance for its AI features points to the same basics as SEO.

Can I pay to appear in AI answers?

Be careful of anyone who says so. There is no guaranteed way to appear.

Do I need new files or special code for AI?

Google says no extra technical requirements apply to its AI features. Keep your pages crawlable and your content helpful.

Will AI replace my website?

A website remains the source AI features link to, and the place customers can act. It stays worth keeping accurate.

What should a small business do first?

Make sure the Google Business Profile and website say the same correct things, then improve the clarity of key service pages.
