SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION

What is SEO?

SEO is the work of helping search engines like Google find your website, understand it and show it to people searching for what you offer.

Short answer

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It means making your website easy for search engines to find and understand, and useful for the people who arrive, so that it can appear when someone searches for what you do. It takes time, and nobody can guarantee a first-page result: Google's own guide says there are no secrets that automatically rank a site first.

  • Address A clean, secure web address.
  • Description The short summary under the title.

How search engines work, in three steps

  1. Finding. A search engine follows links across the web to discover pages.
  2. Understanding. It reads each page and stores what it learns about it.
  3. Showing. When someone searches, it picks the pages it thinks answer the question best, and shows them in an order.

Google explains the basics in its SEO Starter Guide (external site, opens in a new tab). That guide also says there is no guarantee that a particular site will be added to Google's index, which is why careful SEO is about improving your chances, not buying a result.

The three parts of SEO

Real SEO uses all three. Small businesses often gain most from content and local.
PartWhat it meansA simple example
TechnicalMaking sure search engines can reach and read your pagesA page that loads on a phone, with a working address and a sitemap
ContentHaving pages that answer what people ask, in words they useA page called “Plumber in Rundu” with your services and area
LocalBeing clear about where you work, for searches that mean “near me”A complete Google Business Profile (external site, opens in a new tab) with correct hours and phone

What you can do yourself

  • Claim your Google Business Profile and keep your address, hours and phone number correct. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence (Improve your local ranking on Google (external site, opens in a new tab)).
  • Write a clear page for each service. One page that explains one thing well usually beats a page that tries to cover everything.
  • Use the words your customers use. Write “wedding photographer in Windhoek”, not only “visual storytelling”.
  • Make the site work on a phone. Most visits in Namibia are on phones. See our Google guide for step-by-step help.

How your page appears in results

Each result shows a title, an address and a short description. You write the page title and meta description, but search engines may show something else if they think it fits the search better. Google says it may use text other than your title element (title links (external site, opens in a new tab)) and may write its own description (snippets (external site, opens in a new tab)). So write them clearly and honestly, and do not expect exact control.

Benefits and limits

  • It brings people who are already looking for what you offer.
  • Good pages keep working over time, unlike a single advert.
  • Most of the work also makes the site better for visitors.
  • It is slow. Changes can take weeks or months to show.
  • Nobody controls Google. Results move as search engines change.
  • A website that is hard to use will not convert visitors even if it ranks well.

Common mistakes and warning signs

  • Promises of “first page of Google” in a short time. Be careful of anyone who guarantees a ranking.
  • Repeating keywords again and again. It makes text hard to read and does not help.
  • Copying text from other websites. It adds nothing for visitors. Google recommends content written for people first (creating helpful, reliable, people-first content (external site, opens in a new tab)).
  • Ignoring Google Business Profile. For many local businesses it is the quickest improvement.
  • Never checking the results. Search for your own service and town on a phone and see what appears.

For a Namibian business: A guesthouse in Rundu with a clear page for each room type and an accurate Google listing is easier for a traveller searching "guest house Rundu" to find than one with a single photo and no text. No one can promise a first-place ranking.

What is a meta description?

A meta description is a short summary of a page, written in the page's code. A search engine may show it under the page's link in results, but it can choose different text if that suits the search better.

Common questions

How long does SEO take?

Often weeks to months, and it depends on competition and how much needs fixing. Quick wins, such as a correct Google Business Profile, can show sooner.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, for the basics: clear pages, correct business details and a site that works on phones. Technical problems or competitive searches may need a specialist.

Does SEO cost money?

Doing the basics yourself costs time. Paid help depends on the work required and is quoted after a review of the site.

Is SEO the same as Google Ads?

No. Ads are paid placements that stop when you stop paying. SEO improves how your pages appear in the unpaid results.

Can anyone guarantee first place on Google?

No. Google's own guide says there are no secrets that automatically rank a site first. Treat a guarantee as a warning sign.

Need help with this?
